Stories from the water

On the Salaca River

Three days on the Salaca added up to 97.4 km of paddling — from rainy sandstone cliffs to a sun-drenched finish line. On the first day, some of the red sandstone outcrops slipped by almost unnoticed through the rain. The second day brought clearing skies, a longer stretch than planned, and some wonderful surprises along the way — natural springs and caves just begging to be explored by headlamp. The third day delivered the Sarkanā outcrop, a handful of lively little rapids, and a satisfying, fast-paced finale that carried us nearly all the way to the river's mouth. Salaca is a beautiful river with a character all its own — but it's different from the Gauja. Fewer sandy beaches and low-lying cliffs, more red rock and narrow, winding passages. It's absolutely a river worth returning to, though the Gauja still holds the top spot in my heart. If you'd like to try the same route yourself — whether you need advice, a paddling companion, or a boat — all options are on the table.

Emajõe Suursoo: A Kayak Expedition Through Estonia's Largest Bog

Our kayak trip through Emajõe Suursoo took us along quiet rivers, across open lakes, and through mysterious reed beds — a journey that was equal parts peaceful and punishing. Starting from Kavastus, we made our way through the waterways leading to Koosa, Otisaare and Praaga, then continued along the Kalli and Leego rivers. Rain, wind and headwaves made it a real challenge, but the hidden reed tunnels, a pine forest campsite and a gloriously sunny final day made every one of those 37 kilometres worth it. Emajõe Suursoo is a place that leaves a mark on you — wild, silent and utterly unlike anywhere else.
